Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous sites and is said to have the highest density of wildlife in Africa.  Sometimes described as an ‘eighth wonder of the world’, the Crater has achieved world renown, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors each year.  You are unlikely to escape other vehicles here, but you are guaranteed great wildlife viewing in a genuinely mind-blowing environment.  There is nowhere else in Africa quite like Ngorongoro!
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera.  Forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square kilometers, with sides up to 600 meters deep; it is home to approximately 30,000 animals at any one time.  The Crater rim is over 2,200 meters high and experiences its own climate.  From this high vantage point, it is possible to make out the tiny shapes of animals making their way around the crater floor far below.  Swathes of cloud hang around the rocky rim most days of the year and it’s one of the few places in Tanzania where it can get chilly at night.

Activities

Archaelogical Tours

Special guided tours to archaeological sites, mainly the excavation sites at Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli, are rewarding for those who want to trace the life of the ancestors of man. It is required to have an official guide to visiting the excavation sites. Both Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli can be visited at all times of the year.

Walking Safaris

Walking in and around Ngorongoro is adventurous and rewarding. Short hikes can be organized by the lodges in the area, or at the headquarters of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, or through a tour operator. Short walks include trekking down Empakai or Olmoti Craters. Long walks need more planning and are easily booked through tour operators. Long walks include trekking from Olmoti to Empakai, and down to the floor of the Great Rift Valley; trekking in the Northern Highlands Forest Reserve; and trekking in the Eastern Plains around Nasera Rock, Gol Mountains, and Olkarien Gorge.

Cultural Tourism

One can visit the Maasai Cultural bomas in Ngorongoro to learn more about the unique culture of this tribe, or simply to take photographs or buy souvenirs. There is an entrance fee to be paid at the bomas.

Game Drive

Ngorongoro is a safari destination. As a mixed World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, Ngorongoro encompasses a spectacular mosaic of landscape and a wide range of wildlife that portray the true meaning of African safari. There is the game to view all year round.
